The Story

Our doors opened for the first time on Halloween of 2011. Since that time we’ve certainly tweaked a few things…our menu has altered a bit, we’ve switched up a recipe or three on our cocktail menu, we’ve seen some staff and personnel come and go (and some have come back again). But the one thing we’ve never altered is our main objective: to do Cedar Rapids proud. As the downtown of Cedar Rapids continues to grow and rebuild following the dramatic and (for some) life-altering flood of 2008, we can’t help but get excited for what is yet to come.

Owned and operated by locals Andy Franks and Executive Chef Antonio Rivera, the White Star Ale House has operated since its inception on the premise of working hard for those who work hard. We make every effort to provide you with great food, outstanding cocktails, and superior service in an atmosphere of understated elegance. Downtown Cedar Rapids is a unique area rich in history and diversity. We hope to make our mark on its history by being around for many years to come. In our opinion, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

Our Goal

We understand that offering value is the key to our success. Our goal is to be Cedar Rapids’ best restaurant and alehouse without being too expensive or too formal. To that end, we offer up a high-quality, creative, fresh, medium-priced menu in a setting that we believe to be cool, contemporary, and casually comfortable. We further intend to pleasure your palette by offering thirty-six different American draft beers. We’ll feature many local breweries, to be sure, but our tappers will be in constant rotation as we bring in new kegs from around the country. That’s not to mention our amazing selection of bottled beers and American made wines.

Our Conviction

In this day in age, it’s often easy to forget that most fresh and natural products, when consumed in moderation,are not bad for you. We use real butter, eggs, salt, sugar, beef, breads, cheeses, and many other rich and hearty foods. We believe that the Cedar Rapids consumer is well-educated when it comes to good food. We also think that, when given the choice, most consumers will opt for a moderately sized food portion that is priced accordingly.As such, we serve medium-sized portions for medium-sized prices. Simple as that. We have plenty of take-home boxes, so don’t be ashamed if you can’t clear your plate. But we like to think those boxes are better used for take-home desserts. We want you to enjoy every bite you take and savor every drop you drink. If we can send you home happy and fully satisfied, we like our chances of seeing you again sooner, rather than later, to enjoy another night at the White Star Ale House

Our hours

We are open six evenings a week. The bar is open from 3:30 pm until last-call. The kitchen is open from 5pm – 10pm Monday-Friday. On Friday and Saturday evenings we will offer a limited bar menu from 10pm-Midnight.  We are closed on Sundays to allow our employees to spend time with their families.


On a daily basis, we accept reservations for groups of six (6) or more
while seating smaller groups as quickly as possible on a first-come-firstseated
basis. However, on evenings of local venue events (Paramount
Theatre, Theatre Cedar Rapids, U.S. Cellular Center, etc.) we will
accept reservations for any sized party until we reach our quota. We’re
quite proud of reservation policy and adhere to it strictly. Many of our
competitors don’t take reservations at all.

Parties and stuff

An 18% gratuity may be added to parties of 6 or more. We can accommodate parties of various sizes in our main dining room, but we also have 2 private rooms available for very large groups. Our larger private dining area, called The Museum Room, can accommodate 30-50 people for dinner or cocktails and appetizers. The Museum is perfect for rehearsal dinners, meetings, holiday parties, and so on. Our private lobby space accommodates up to 30 for dinner and 40 or more for drinks and appetizers.

Our specials

American, locally grown, fresh, seasonal and organic foods and beverages will be featured. Our menu will change seasonally. Our specials will change daily. We will offer both early and late evening bar specials.

We feature 36 beers on tap (23oz.), more than anyone in Cedar Rapids. We also have a varied selection of bottled beers. Our happy hours (half price on draft beers, house wine, and house signature cocktails) are from 3:30-6pm and again from 10-midnight!

We will offer late night entertainment Fri. and Sat. starting at 9:30pm. Our entertainment will be adult themed, low key/easy listening; maybe jazz, blues, classical, comedy, modern dance, theatre previews, symphony artists, holiday music, video… anything that is cool, cutting edge and creative.

  • Sunday – Kids eat free; one child per adult
  • Monday – Martini Monday – All Martinis 50% off
  • Tuesday – Date Night; Half Price on all bottles of wine (one per couple)
  • Wednesday – Hump Day;  25% of appetizers all night (in the Tap Room only).
  • Thursday – Ladies Night Out/Take the Day Off Tomorrow; 25% off Entree Salads. 25% off House Mojitos, House Margaritas, House Martinis, and House Wines. Note: Discount is for all customers not just ladies.
  • Friday – Cool; Free Late Night Entertainment (9:30-12:30).
  • Saturday – Cool; Free Late Night Entertainment (9:30-12:30).
